Gunfire killed three people and wounded four others, including a two-year-old boy, at 6 p.m. Sunday outside the Seattle Center Armory. The Bite of Seattle food festival was in full swing. One suspect was arrested immediately by officers posted at the event; another remained at large Monday morning. The shooting occurred at the northwest corner of the Armory building. No cameras covered that spot. Police later confirmed what witnesses suspected: "No cameras captured the shooting" (Source: Seattle Times).

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson initially told reporters two suspects were in custody. She corrected herself. Wilson called the officers' response "heroic," adding: "No one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before attending an event" (Source: Seattle Times). The Bite of Seattle drew 282,000 attendees in 2025. This year, police had stationed "dozens of officers" throughout the grounds. They were close enough to apprehend one shooter within moments. They were not close enough to prevent the exchange of fire that killed three people and sent a 56-year-old woman to the hospital in serious condition.

Seattle's gun violence has surged. Between 2013 and 2024, shots fired incidents rose 194%, according to a city auditor report published last year. Between 2020 and 2024 alone, shots fired increased 71%; fatal shootings rose 23% (Source: Seattle City Auditor). The city's gun violence rate in 2023 was 1.25 per 1,000 residents—higher than King County's 1.01. Seattle accounted for 45% of shots fired incidents in the county in 2024, and 51% of both fatal and nonfatal shooting victims (Source: King County Prosecutor's Office).

Youth drove much of this. Youth shooting victims doubled between 2019 and 2024, reaching 61 last year—a 45% jump from 2023 (Source: King County Prosecutor's Office). Police described the apprehended suspect as a "young person." They have released no further details about motive, gang affiliation, or whether the shooters knew each other.

City officials have long known their public events strain police resources. At a Seattle Special Events Committee meeting in January 2024, officials noted that "Police Officers are spread too thin, so need to figure out staffing in advance" (Source: Seattle Special Events Committee). The committee was planning for a July 2024 Bite of Seattle. They were not planning for 2026.

The Seattle Center did not respond to requests for comment Monday on whether camera coverage has expanded since those warnings. The festival continued Sunday evening in other parts of the grounds. The Space Needle stayed lit.
